A big thank you to the 3rd Grade Class at Sunview Elementary,
Mr Beumi and Mrs Irwin, for their $1500 donation to Marilyn's Voice. |
The third grade class worked on the unit without the use of any textbooks. The hands-on activities help the students grasp the tough concepts of economics.
- To start up the business the class wrote persuasive letters requesting a loan for $300 from the banker (the school principal).
- The students used their recess as collateral in case they were unable to repay the loan.
- Students were split into two groups during production- assembly line and independent production.
- Toys created and sold were braided pull toys, braided ball toys, cat teasers, and pet and human scarves. Products were created using fleece, yarn, tennis balls and chopsticks. Items sold for $1-$3.
- Parents were called in to help cut the fleece. This was done to explain the concept of bartering.
- Sales took place for 5 days during lunch periods at school and 2 Saturdays. One Saturday at Pet Supplies Plus in Lyndhurst and one at the Sunview Holiday Shop.
- The students unanimously agreed to donate all proceed to a local animal rescue group, Marilyn's Voice.
- A check for $1500 was presented to Marilyn's Voice on December 17th, 2009. This surpassed last years record total of $1021.98 raised by the Sunview third graders.
