September 23, 2012 - Updates

Update from the "Mentor Patch" September 17, 2012...>

As some of you are aware, Marilyn's Voice assisted with the breeder/puppy mill/hoarder situation in Richland County over the last couple of days. We feel fortunate that we were able to help these helpless animals in need. Since Marilyn's Voice specializes in puppy mill dogs, it is onl;y fitting that we stepped up. Thank you so much to all of our wonderful fosters and emergency fosters who have agreed to take in these dogs- this is the main reason we were able to help.

Updated picture of Janis! Taken September 10!

Janis

Janis-- is getting stronger. She is still on antibiotics and cannot be spayed yet. She has gained a whopping 5.5 ounces and now weighs 3 pounds 12 ounces. She loves to be held, so she can see everything around her.

Carmella-- is really starting to come out of her shell.. She has the cutest little hackneyed gait and prances when she walks. Her white blood cell count is normal now, and she was able to be spayed.

Miller-- had to had a nail removed because it was embedded in his paw pad. Has had ear and eye infections, and is still being treated for a skin irritation. He is very much a mill dog; and will take a lot of time and TLC.

Greta-- very sweet. She is very attached to her foster mom, and follows her everywhere. She likes human company (actually prefers it); but is scared of being picked up. Housebreaking is a challenge still.

Janis- Morning of rescue

Probably the most frail and sickly of the bunch we took; Janis will not be ready for adoption for awhile. Included pictures of her nails and of her teeth (below).

Her teeth are some of the worst we've ever seen. She has both a double ear infection and a respiratory infection, probably both due to the rotten and decaying teeth.

She is currently on antibiotics, to combat the infections. We will not be able to spay her, nor do a dental on her until the infections are under control. She is a petite thing, weighing only 3pounds 6oz upon intake. She is eating well and sleeping alot to allow her body to heal.

Dallas
Dallas - Morning of rescue

DALLAS--one of the less severe of the mill dogs. While he is still a bit skittish about being picked up, he loves people and freely wags his tail when he sees his foster mom.

Dallas is crate-trained and doing well on his potty training. His foster mom absolutely believes that Dallas is ready to go to his forever home!

Greta is now adopted!!

Adopted! Maura, while skittish and shy, started coming out of her shell rather quickly. She was adopted by a previous adopter of a Marilyn's Voice dog, an adopter with Chihuahua, and mill dog experience.

Adopted

And now Penny Lane joins Maura!

Below is a Facebook post from Friday August 17, 2012:

What a wild couple of days. Marilyn's Voice's own foster coordinator, Cheryl Rauch along with our dear friend, Martha Leary, from Star-Mar rescue have been down in Shelby both Wednesday and today, helping The Richland County Humane Society and the Humane Society of the United States(HSUS), cleaning cages and assessing dogs. We are happy to report that we were able to take into rescue 15 Chihuahuas from this horrible situation. After seeing the conditions on Wednesday, Cheryl mobilized our fosters, and everyone stepped up to plate by doubling and tripling up on foster dogs, so we could take as many as possible.
Marilyn's Voice does n
ot shy away from the old, ugly or infirm. Many of the dogs we took may have significant medical issues, and we had to make an emergency run with one of them to our vet earlier today. All of them were completely infested with fleas, so much so that some may be anemic and most will have some worm infestation. Many of the dogs have significant hair loss due to the flea infestations and most will lose teeth due to advanced plaque and decay. Nails on them were so long that they had become embedded in their paw pads, and one had to have it's nail removed due to it being embedded so deeply.

As of tonight, all 14 dogs taken in by Marilyn's Voice are bathed, warm, and safe in foster homes, and vetting has been scheduled starting Monday.

If you can help by donating, we would appreicate it. Even a $1 is a great help!
